Yoga Special July

Óla! I'm Sipe from Finland and I teach yoga at the Surfivor Camp this summer. After exhausting our muscles in the sea, it's important to give them a nice and relaxing reward by stretching and practicing yoga. I teach classical hatha yoga specially tuned for surfers.

The yoga training normally takes place at the camp premises after surfing. In the "Yoga Special July" we're going to offer morning yoga sessions and yoga in the forest/beach for those who are interested. Yoga is suitable for beginners and it goes very well with surfing : )

Damn,

I broke my board!
I can't believe how this happened?

The waves today are really nice, 4 ft small and quite mellow!
I was riding this kind of slow right hander and all of a sudden my board just snapped.
No way I could see this coming!

So, here is to say goodbye to my beloved SEMENTE 6'1''
This board was custom shaped by Nick Uricchio. It has two parabolic stringers. This means the stringers are inserted in the rail of the board instead of being in the center, like most surfboards.
This results in more flex while carving and more lip projection!

Well, R.I.P. my good old friend! I will surely remember all the good rides we had together!

2010 Dream Tour - Tiago Pires out in 3rd round!

Hi everybody!

Long time no posting. This means we've been busy at the new house and haven't found much time between coming home and falling asleep on the couch to do some blogging!

Well, this time I just want to share about the Quiksilver Pro Gold Coast, which is happening at the moment at Snapper's Rock! This is the first event of the year which brings a new format and new rules for the elite surfers, making it more tight to stay in the event!

I would like to focus, of course, on our portuguese surfer Tiago Pires, who is in great shape but unfortunately got eliminated today, in the 3rd round of the event against Jordy Smith! Tiago seemed a little unstable in the on-shore conditions today, which came in favour of a consistent and stylish Jordy Smith from South Africa!

Nevertheless, our Tiago Pires is still very motivated and enthusiastic about staying on the tour and getting his scores. This doesn't keep him from paying attention to what's happenning in the world. The late tragic storms on Madeira Island resulted in dozens of deaths and many lost people, not to mention the huge damages caused by this natural disaster. Beeing on tour and not able to help out personally, Tiago, who is a regular visitor to Madeira, decided to donate his Prize Money to the sufferers of the disaster. For us this is an example and we've already followed the step of Tiago, by donating some money for the people of Madeira who really need help now.

This week we already made a lot of progress. We knocked down the kitchen and the bathroom, started painting the ceilings and choosing the colors of the interior of the house (which we are not going to tell you...yet).

Hey everybody,

it's oficial: WE HAVE A NEW SURF HOUSE!!! Already popped the champagne and celebrated!

Now it's gonna be 10 frickin' weeks of renotvating and "pimping" and we're ready for a new SUFRIVOR era!

We don't have many pics yet, as the place looks like a mess, but we'll keep you posted on our progress!

Season starts 11.04.10 and to celebrate the new Surf House, we will have a promotion going on during April + May, under the name "All together now", which offers the accommodation for repeating guests and 50% off on accommodation for all new guests. GOOD STUFF!

This time our dear friend left to another place!

Here is to say goodbye to our friend Alexandre.
Sadly he passed away today!

Alex (from KOALA Surf Shop) left us and we will always remember him as a companion, partner and most of all... a good friend!

The reason I share this with you here on the Surfivor Blog is that, unfortunately, it is often in moments like this that we appreciate the real value of life and I want to tell you:

Enjoy every moment, love everybody and help. Help the ones who need help!

we want to thank you for coming to Surfivor Camp. Last season 2009 was great. We worked hard to make everything as nice as possible for all our guests to enjoy their surfing holiday!
I want to say a special "thank you" to my team:

We went there to see all the best surfers of the world rippin' our waves in portugal.
Guys like Kelly Slater, Owen Wright, Joel Parkinson and our portuguese rider in the tour, Tiago Pires.
Unfortunately Tiago didn't make it through his heat, losing to Nathan Curran in the first round and our portuguese wild cards David Luis and Justin Mujica also lost their chance to proceed in the Rip Curl Pro Search!
We really were stoked seeing all the action live!

You know... At the end of the season, the team is slowly leaving Surfivor and they get back to their normal lifes again.... that makes us a bit sad. In those months that they work at Surfivor, you get a bond with the team. Especially when it is a person who meant a lot to Surfivor and to the rest of the team. Kaisa is one of them... The stretching sessions, the warm-up before surfing, yoga in the forest, yoga on the pier at sunset, a great help with everything.. and( i will never forget..) ginger-tea! That is why we had special "last surf-trip" for her.
After a nice surf at Aguçadoura beach, just south Viana do Castelo, we headed for the mountains. At an old monastery we stopped and had a nice picknick, a vist at the creek and a lovely yoga-session with a view over the mountains. Check out these pictures...

On the 14th of August we had a great party right in front of our beach house.
Surf at Night.. Great dj´s and great bands made the night perfect.
Unfourtunatly there where no waves and so... no surf.. But it didn´t ruin the party at all!!

At our beach house we made our own party with the Surfivors and we had VIP places on our terras with a perfect view on the main stage!

We can proudly say that last week we had our first " An Asshole" competition this year! And it is not about who can surf the best.. no! It is about who can make the most funny, craziest moves. And we have seen the most funny and craziest moves and rewarded it with 1st, 2nd and 3rd place and a "best move" price!

Hi,

here I felt like a real school teacher, with a real classroom and all the kids paying total attention (yeah...right) to what I'm saying!
Actually this was a great theory lesson, where we talked about all elements involved in surfing, from tides to currents, generation of waves to off-shore winds, from the history of surfing to surf board shapes and much more.
I think everybody enjoyed it quite a lot and it was great to have feedback and see how the guests are interested in learning more and more about the art of wave surfing!

After a little brak, and with the tide too high to surf, it was time for a nice Yoga session in the forest! Now everybody is feeling relaxed and ready for another surf session tomorrow morning.

Yesterday we made a litlle surftrip to another beach. The uncrowded beach of Paramos!
Because of a very nice south swell, the water was warm enough to surf in shorties and even in boardshorts.

every year on the 23rd of June, the city of Porto celebrates S. João, the holiday of it's Saint Patron!
We Surfivors never miss the chance to this great party, which gathers thousands of people on Porto's streets and tradition is to walk around with plastic hammers and banging other people on their heads. Other than you might think, people enjoy this tradition and have great fun. It's the real good atmosphere and the friendly people of Porto that make this festival such a special event and our guests were amazed and overwhelmed!

Hi Everybody,

team Surfivor is very happy. We have fullfilled our dream: we have a new House RIGHT AT THE BEACH!
This will be our new Base where all our guests can meet and hang out! It will be where Breakfast is served and where we can BBQ. It is right in the center of town and thereby close to every shop, restaurant and Bars!
At the moment we are working a lot fixing the house and adapting it to our needs, but soon it will be ready and looking great! It will be ready in July!
No pictures yet...we don't want to destroy the surprise....=)

But this wave breaks only 30 m away from the house......

Imagine if.....

Imagine if you have never seen the ocean before.
Imagine if you have never seen a surf board before.
Imagine if you have never worn a wetsuit.
Imagine if you have never caught a wave before.

This is the story of Dominik from Switzerland, who never had seen the ocean before, who never had been on a surf board before and who never in his life had caught a wave before!

When Dominik came to Surfivor, it was his first time in a foreign country and it was his first time
he was on an airplane.

His friends Valerie and Raphael convinced him to come over and try surfing. They told him that
he would really enjoy it, specially as a Snowboarder!

We went to Matosinhos beach for the first surf in his life. The waves were nice and small for beginners andwe were really stoked!

As I was standing next to Dominik, who was ready to paddle for his first wave, I told him
that if he would catch the approaching wave and stand up on the surf board, I would buy him
a case of SUPER BOCK (our national beer).

Well, no need to say that he earned his beers, because the boy stood up and surfed the wave.
Of course his tachnique was not perfect, but it is simply amazing how naturally he did it and
learned to surf within a week!

My experience of ten years teaching people to stand up on a Surfboard and ride waves tells me, that any one can do it. Anyone has the ability to surf, no matter what colour, origin or gender.
For some (like Dominik), it's the easiest thing in the world, for other the standing up is more difficult and it is necessary to keep believing and practising. You will make it!

One thing is for sure: evrybody who rides a waves is happy. Everybody gets a beautyful smile on their face and evrybody adapts to the ocean and mother nature (and not the other way around!!!)

Keep riding, keep practising, keep searching for your perfect waves!
You can interprete this as an metapher!

Just to show you that also in the winter we get nice sunny days, 20º air temp (in the afternoon, at night it's cold) and some of the best and cleanest swells through out the year!
On this session last weekend, my best friend Tiago was catching some sun and taking a few pictures of us in the water! How nice the ocean was ....

Summer's gone...

Dear Surfivors,

thanks for this great season. It has been an awesome summer with all you nice people here in Cortegaça!

Thanks also to my team ( of who some still paddle around: Katrijn, Eduardo, Zeza, Mishka), they have been such a great help to make it happen!

This summer again, there were a lot of funny people at Surfivor and the atmosphere has been as always: relaxed, good mood and one big family! The fact that it is a multi - cultural place makes it so special!

Another thank you goes to the great camping and caravan community of Cortegaça to let us enjoy the greatness of atmosphere, down in the very end of that camping, under the green roof of pines and close to the beach; the place we wanna be =)

In September, October and even now in November, the weather and waves have been great and consistent and we're still enjoying sunshine and the Maceda waves!

The camp at the camping is now closed (since we got expelled in late September from the campsite for assaulting their beach bar, in search for the last drop of alcohol...), but our surfhouse will be open all winter, for those who still would like to enjoy a little escape, in nice warm shelter!

Take advantage of the new Low Cost connections to Oporto, coming from Germany, Holland and since yesterday also Sweden!

So, it would be really great to see some of you again! We're always ready to take you surfing

and enjoy your holiday!

Keep up to date here on the blog, here goes the promise that this write lazy Mr. Flexible will update frequently about what's going on on Surfivor!

This year’s Surfivor staff is perfect. We gathered people from all over Europe to cover all different tasks necessary to make Surfivor work. Without them the Surfivor camp wouldn’t be as fun as it is now!

Miguel is the organizer and director of Surfivor Surf Camp. He grew up in Germany and moved to Portugal in 1988 where he started surfing. From that moment on, Miguel’s life took a new direction and he hasn’t stopped catching waves since then. He has worked in many surf camps in Portugal where he gained his experience as a surfing instructor. In 2003 decided to start his own surf camp: Surfivor. Furthermore is he the regional champion of 2004 and 2005 and first place in the ranking of this year’s championship.
His passion however is to teach people how to surf and make them understand the surfing lifestyle.

That’s what happened to Katrijn, one of his students in 2005. And nowadays Katrijn is our most dedicated surf instructor. In April 2007 she completed the BSA level 1 surfing instructor course in Cornwall UK. Next to giving surf lessons, Katrijn is a film director. She is Dutch, but since three years integrating in the Portuguese culture and language. Her company is the cutest dog in the world, Zezinha.

Zeza is like the mom of Surfivor Camp. She takes care of the breakfast and maintenance of the surf camp and makes sure it is always clean and tidy. She is THE best! She speaks Portuguese and is learning English, the most caring and sweet mom for all guests and she fully supports her son Educardo at his surf contests.

Eduardo is sixteen and the son of Zeza. Although he doesn’t eat vegetables, he is running the Portuguese Junior Championship and is on the 8th place at the moment. All he wants is to paddle out and catch waves. Outside of the water he practices on his skateboard, trying out new moves and tricks. He is the most humble and simple person, always ready to give you a hand and guide you whilst surfing.

Chris, our German chauffeur drives in an American car (Ford). You can find him somewhere along the airport of Porto and the train stations of Espinho and Cortegaça. It is his job to pick you up on your arrival and take you to the surf camp. In his leisure time he likes to go to the beach for surfing.

Luca is our Italian surf coach assistant. After spending winter season on the Canary Islands he came to Surfivor to assist in the surf lessons and catch some waves in his leisure time. Furthermore does he work in Dacasca Bar, pouring out caipirinhas to all Surfivors. His good mood and Italian lifestyle will guarantee lots of laughing.

Lisette studies tourism in the Netherlands and does promotional work for the Surfivor Surf Camp. She used to come to Surfivor Camp on weekends, to escape the routine of her internship in Salamanca. She is good at languages, but is still learning how to catch a good wave…

Ok, the initiative to write into this blog is hard, but today , to complete our wonderful Surfivor "Stuff", our dear friend Luca Bobbio arrived to assist our surfing courses and make the connection to Dacasca Bar, where he will be pouring drinks on the house!!!
So, what are you waiting for? Bazooca is back...

Hi everybody,

long time no posting. That means Mr. Surfivor has been very busy in planning the new Season 2007!
And "NEW" is going to be the key word. Many surprises to come for this summer!
Our main concern is to provide you the best surfing holiday ever! So we are putting all the best equipment together for that!

First, we got wrid of our dear old Peugeot Surf Van, before it exploded while on a surf trip. Therefor we will have a new Van, with more seats to take you surfing to the best spots!

Thank you, "Peugeot Break" for all the trips and transfers!

Second, for those who would rather prefer a roof over their head, we are very proud to present you our new SURFIVOR HOUSE. It will be substituting the Mobile Home package, offering you a very nice portuguese holiday house, with all the comfort and perfect for those who like a little bit more privacy!

Surfivor Season will start on the 15th of April, all the way untill mid October! We hope for great weather, good waves and lots of fun!

One thing that is making me sooooooo happy, is that I will be able to count on my dear assistant Katrijn for one more season! For those who have been at Surfivorcamp, you know that Katrijn is the most dedicated, sweet and caring person with everybody at the camp!

But it's not only Katrijn who is coming back, but also Gudi (a.k.a. Gudrun Sieglinde - I think I need to talk to her parents), Amrei, Eduardo and his Mom Zeza and Chris!

Surfing with Eduardo is simply great!
It is just so nice to see the kid ripping more and more!

Carlos Eduardo Ribeiro is 16 years old and comes from Espinho, North Portugal.
His dream is to become a portuguese pro surfer and get a good sponsorship,
to allow him to travel and surf!
He is focused on combining his studies with his carreer as a surfer.
Eduardo is a smart guy, with principles and who knows his limits!
I am glad that I can coach him!
